Issue Position: Job Creation

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

There are so many economic forces at work here that this becomes a very tangled problem. The Republican mantra of "Lowering taxes on businesses and the wealthy = job creation" is not only overly simplistic, but flat out wrong. Ultimately, what creates jobs is demand for a product or service. As legislators we need to build a strong, stable economy that instills confidence in consumers. It is important that we have policies that put more dollars in the hands of the people who will spend it for those products and services, the working class people of Washington. This of course will necessitate, long term, an overhaul of our tax system.

In the short term, however, I would support legislation similar to the 2012 Jobs Now Act that will create an estimated 18,000 jobs, more than half permanent. This bill passed with overwhelming majorities in both houses. Unfortunately, both of the incumbent legislators in the 39th voted against this job creating, environmentally sound, forward thinking bill.
